Binukid Words

Happy New Year!

So recently, I attended a "ritual" to bless an agricultural land. A ritual in the Binukid language is usually called a " pamuhat ." Apparently, the root word is "buhat" which loosely translates to, "to do." A pamuhat or buhat can be for different purposes but I am in no position to discuss it as I am but a curious person from the outside trying to take a look. Hehe. 

But I have participated in various tribal rituals which are basically prayers, petitions, conversation, seeking of permission and guidance, thanksgiving, and so on. They are lovely.

Anyway, here are some words that my curious self has encountered during that day and the hours after.

1. pure - true, genuine.
Example: Yan ka sa wagas Magbabaya (You are the true God.)

Note: I may have (or have not) mentioned that Magbabaya is what the lumads  call their Supreme Being. Magbabaya is the Creator but  baya  also means pasya in Filipino (Magbabaya = Nagpapasya) or the Decision Maker.

2. matata-o - knowledgeable
Example: Matatao ki mamuhat ho mga kanta (We are knowledgeable in creating songs)

3. dunya - world (Filipino - mundo, sanlibutan)

4.  immaturity - people (Filipino - humanity)

5. gagaw - love
Note: For almost a decade, I thought gagaw is care. But apparently gagaw is love based on my conversations with some lumad friends <3

Nalugay En!

Hello there! It's been a while. A friend saw this blog recently and it was like a wake up call to go back and write again. Hi Michelle!

I rarely use Binukid nowadays and even Waray (!!!) so it will be nice to write simple but helpful phrases or sentences again. Here are some useful phrases and sentences you can use:

1. Amin kad ... ? ( Do you have...?)

• You can say like "Amin kad wahig?" (Do you have water?)
• If you do have it you can reply with: "Amin!" (I do have it)
• If you don't have that thing, you can say "huda" (none)

2. Naamin en (spent, used up, consumed, or exhausted)

• "Amin kad wahig?" "Naamin en" which means you don't have water anymore and it has been used up or consumed already.
• "Naamin en sa kamote ko" which translates to "My sweet potatoes are gone or consumed"

3. Nalugay en (It's been a while)

• the word "lugay" means lengthy or prolonged as in a time duration and when you say "Manay nalugay kad?" it loosely translates to what took you so long? Manay or imba denote "why".
• "Lugay ayuwa" means it's sooooo looong. For example: "Lugay ayuwa sa pila ta bangko" which means you took such a long time in the lines (pila) at the bank (bangko).

4. Matino ayuwa (It's super cold)

• As in the previous example, the word "ayuwa" is used to denote intensity. When it takes so long you may say "lugay ayuwa" and when it's cold (matino) you can say "matino ayuwa" which means it's not just cold BUT very cold.
• It's very cold in Bukidnon recently but in the communities where several of our IP tribes live it's "matino ayuwa".

1. corn - kamais
2. root crops - lagutmon (it may be pronounced as lag'tm'n since there is an "impit" in some vowels)
3. water - wahig
4. fire - hapoy
5. dog - aso (like the Tagalog word)

Here are the lyrics of the official hymn of the Province of Bukidnon.

The English version is entitled "Bukidnon, my Home" and the lyrics go:

Chorus:

But what is the literal translation of the SONG?

Wherever I may go,

Mountain ranges, homes,
Rice fields, plains,
pastures, pineapple plantations,
everything, a source of living

The skies are cloudy and shaded

sometimes it is rain-drenched

• To be quiet.
• Maghagteng ka! (Be quiet. As in scolding)

2. sanghid (sang-hid)

• To ask permission
• Agsanghid kay ta maghipanaw kay. (We are asking permission because we are leaving)

3. lambog (lambog)

• Throw
• Ilambog nu hayan. (Throw that)
